Hello, im new to this site, i have 2 db 995s, a 71-2 k reg and a m reg, iv aquired a puh to fit with the sliding bars and brackets etc, i was wondering when i use it, for example carting grass when i have to change trailers, is it ok to leave the hitch locked up on the hydraulics lock thing or do i have to put the bolts/pins in? thanks Tom

I seem to remember that DB manuals said that bolts had to be fitted when using the hitches (certainly the earlier ones without the seperate hooks). However, I didn't read that until after I had been working a PUH-equipped 990 Implematic with a 5T slurry tanker for some time!

I suspect that, in the real world, most people would just use the linkage-lock and never have a problem. It would be a real PITA if you had to stop and remove/refit bolts for every load during silage time - it might be quicker to use a jack and ordinary drawbar!

On this type of PUH locking it up by means of the lift-latch is the only way you can use it as a PUH as you can only put the side bolts in with no weight on the hitch and even if you could, once you have weight on it you'd never be able to get them out. These hitches were only designed to take a 3 ton load and no more. It wasn't until the lift-chain type came in with a seperate latching mechanism that a heavier weight to 5 tons could be safeley carried on it.

reminds me of when i first fitted the pickup hitch on my 990, to get the hitch to raise enough to get the pins in loaded i had to cut nearly an inch out of the slotted lift rods, those lift rods have a certain amount of "stretch" in them, on ours when you lift it right up the hook is fully raised and you can put a pin through it slightly before the lift latch engages, would help if the lift rods were adjustable i suppose

oh right, thanks, thought it was going to be hard work putting bolts in, should be ok with 6/8 ton tandem axle trailers, most weights carried on the wheels, thanks again

you can lock it off on your lift latch, then move the three way valve out of "L", this will provide added security providing the lift ram seals are good, then if the valve chest does lose a bit of pressure of the lift latch fail (extremely unlikely however) the oil trapped in the ram will hold the trailer safely

yeah thats a good idea cuz you have to move the 3 way valve anyway to tip so may as well have the extra safety, thanks

the other possibility, depending on your drawbar frame, is to find a set of latches, look under your drawbar where the two lenghts of steel go towards the front of the tractor, on the inside of these there might be two bits of steel rod an inch long welded to the sides of the bars, directly under the pto case, and two empty holes above in the hornplates that come down from the pto case, if so you can fit the proper latch kit and a release lever behind the seat, if you can find one, our 1390 has these parts and im currently looking for enough bits to make the latch up
