Hi All,

I know this is a popular issue and I've read all the posts and tried lots of things with a friend who is an electronics wizz but the battery still fails to charge correctly.

It's an 885, 1975 model with a Lucas alternator, new battery and a charging lamp purchased from Halfords.

We have put switch ignition onto small terminal on alternator and the charging light stays on, however putting switched ignition directly onto the terminal causes it to start charging

Any ideas?

So the large terminal(s) on the alternator are connected to the battery +, and the live ignition wire is going from the switch, through the charging lamp and then onto the small terminal on the alternator?

When you remove the lamp and just put power to the small terminal it charges, but when going through the lamp first it doesn't?

What wattage is the lamp, is it the correct spec?

Yes that's all correct.

We tested the lamp and, providing I've done it the right way it's 5w, here is a link to it, http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... 55229#tab1

Do you think I need a higher/lower wattage lamp? Would this work, http://v2.gb.sparex.com/ItemDetails/Ite ... mber=20964

Thanks v much for looking at this, much appreciated.

thats the same lamp that most people use (although halfords price is b***** expensive!) have you checked the continuity of the wiring, could be a fault in the the wire, or possibly in the spliced connector behind the dash, the one where the main ign feed from the switch branches off to the various instruments, or the block connector where the wiring exits the dash, these are prone to overheating and the pins burning out

It's been totally rewired and we've made some test cables to try and get it going so pretty sure it's not a wiring fault.

I would go for a max wattage of 2 watts. There may be too much resistance using the 5 watt.Alternators can be exact about what bulb is used.I used to have a Christmas tree bulb Smile on another tractor and although it would go off eventually, it needed to be revved hard before it would go off.So I fitted a slightly bigger one and it went off no problem at idle.

You can also check the resistance with a meter on both bulbs using a meter to check this too.

Migth be a stupid question, but are you sure you have an alternator or a dynamo ? If its a dynamo there should be a regulator somewhere and that could be the reason for it working the the way you discribe..

Just an idea I had when reading your post..

Hi, I use a 5 watt bulb on my cherry picker so it will charge at tick over. I suspect you have a faulty surge diode that is soaking up the power from the charge lamp that should energise tha alternator. Try disconecting the surge diode, it looks like half a malteaser with a wire out of the top although some are flat like a tablet.

Hi All,

Thanks for all your messages which have been very helpful, the issue is finally solved by adding an additional bulb into the circuit, the alternator now charges the battery and that has made me very happy!
