did an engine swap between two 990 imps today, an early 4/47, aluminium rocker cover, forged axle model, and a late "c" reg with fabricated axle and battery under aircleaner. Early one has stripped all the teeth off the timing gears and rammed the pistons into the valves so an engine swap with a donor tractor with broken gearbox was deemed easiest solution.

Took the engine out, seems there is no thrust bearing as such on these? There is the usual "snout" sticking out the gearbox, with whats is normally the thrust bearing carrier sliding upon it, but no bearing attached to it, moving the pedal forces the stationary carrier onto the release fingers of the clutch! This just doesnt seem correct to me, although the owner says the clutch was functioning well before the timing gears exploded. The wear patterns on both the carrier and clutch match and the two parts mate, so is this just how they are?

Must say ive never seen another 990 like this, long while since i had an imp apart, either it should have a bearing or a carbon type ring on the clutch fingers/ bearing carrier?

thats the conclusion ive came to after looking through various aftermarket spares websites. Best add one of those to the shopping list along with a new cover and plate then Smile

The 990/B(single clutch)had a long thrust bearing with a carbon block. The carbon was a renewable item on its own.
