Just a quick question on removing the head on 880 selectamatic,
I'm fitting a new head gasket on the 880 and I am awaiting
a service manual I have ordered to arrive, so need to ask Can I
removed the head assembly in one unit or do I have to remove the injectors out from the head first, I'll remove all the inj pipes and rocker gear but wondered if I may be able to leave the injectors in place or is it safer to remove them...

| Jim. It's advisable to remove the injectors, firstly because the tips protrude out of the face of it a little and if you place it face down on a hard surface you stand the risk of damaging them, secondly you will be best to replace the copper sealing washers and thirdly in order to have a flat head surface to be able to clean it back to shiny or at least remove any carbon deposits. |

Thankyou Powerrabbit, I will remove them as advised and see about the copper washers, I have ordered a top end vrs kit and I wonder if those washers may be in with it,hopefully!
I managed to find one of the I&T service manuals you recommended to me on the Amazon w/site so thats on its way now too! Thanks again for the good advice Powerrabbit

| The head gasket set Jim should contain the head gasket, air and exhaust manifold gaskets, thermostat O ring seal, (2 types) rocker cover gasket, injector copper washers, rocker cover stud nut copper 'squash' washers and another gasket and a few little bits that you probably won't need to use. There will also be a water pump bypass rubber 'block' in the pack as well but this is for the later type as fitted to the 885 and above, you'r bypass hose will be a short hose with a fat middle, you will need to find one like yours. |

Thats great news on the washers, thanks for the tip on the bypass hose, I want to change the thermostat and all the rad hoses at the same time, a seller on ebay has both hoses with a short fat bypass hose in a kit so I will order that from him and I've also removed the radiator now and am thinking of taking it to a radiator shop and having it properly flushed out, I've found too that the welsh plugs will need to be changed in the block due to coolant weeping through one of them, so I will give the block a good flush out while there out at the same time, not sure on the condition of the water pump yet I may replace it too just to be safe.

| Which welch plugs have gone Jim? The usual one is the little one at the rear of the cylinder head and sometimes the large one on the back of the block, both in front the fuel tank, not sure about the large one but you can get the small one in stainless steel. Good way to tell what the water pump is like is to hold one side of the fan blade and waggle it forward and back without the belt on and if it waggles a fair amount indication that the bearing is on it's way out, if it doesn't move up and down or side to side it's probably ok. the beauty of these pumps is that they are greaseable. |

The one that I can see is leaking is in the block just above the starter motor, I like the idea of replacing them with stainless ones, if I can get them I will pull all of them out and replace them, the spare parts book says they are 1 3/4 inch for the ones in the block and 1 inch for the one in the head. I checked the pump with waggling the fan blade as you advised and it has very little movement, I can feel a minor rumble in it when its rotated but that may be sorted out by greasing it at the nipple, I didn't realise the aftermarket pumps are ungreaseable but looking at the pictures of replacement pumps online none of them have a grease point, so as this stage I will try to save mine as being able to grease it is much better!
Interestingly it turns out my pump does have the round rubber ring between it and the head, don't know if that means the head may have been changed at some point or if in the production run later parts were fitted to this tractor, it also has multi bladed fan. I havent pulled the head as yet to report on its condition but will once it stops raining! |

| Strange that you have the block type seal between the head and water pump, only thing I can think is that the 880 is a very late model, they were made up to 1971, and that's about the time the old type bypass hose was discontinued. This in fact give you a better chance of finding a new pump if ever you need one as these later ones are more readily available. It would have been fitted with a multi-blade fan, plastic one I reckon, these gave better cooling by drawing more volume of air through the radiator, were an optional extra here but probably standard on export models. There won't be any need for you to remove the water pump when taking off the head. Your welch plugs should be no problem to source, especially knowing the sizes and when fitting the new ones, clean out the 'step' in the block holes with a fine wire brush on a drill and just smear a very light smear of sealant liquid around the hole step which will help the plugs seal better when you tap them in, the plugs, as you know, are just a steel disc slightly convex, just make sure when you fit them that the 'dome' is outside and hit them right in the middle and they will spread to tighten and seal. |

Thanks PR, I removed the rocker cover and was pleased to see it all looked pretty clean in this area, no oil sludge build up at all, removed the head and see nice clean unsooted valves and the tops of first two pistons look like new with no carbon buildup at all. The rear Pot piston was part way down the bore and had rusty dirty water in the top of the piston hollows so cleaned this out and I thought good, just a head gasket needed as the old copper gasket looked aged, also I had noticed the rear head bolts were a little looser than the rest so blamed that on the failed gasket. however I couldn't see on the head gasket where it was leaking accross to no 3 pot, scratched my head a little and then decided to put a wrench on the front pully and lower the piston all the way down to look further down the bore, this is where I found what had really happened, At full bottom there is a small hole through the cylinder wall to the water jacket and it has been caused by corrosion. So now I have my diagnosis
and I see that there are no liners in this engine to pull and replace sadly, so my next option I guess is to have sleeves fitted, can you tell me if this is the usual thing that is done with AD 3 55 engines? or is it not thought practicle, I'm not sure yet if sleeves are even available as I havn't been able to find any rebuild kits advertised with them, and at this point havn't rung any engineering firms for quotes or other advice. I thought I would start by asking here first. What would you do? |

| A repair sleeve could be done, it is done on Swiss cheese Ford blocks all the time. I'd replace the block myself,heat transfer is better when the iron is one solid piece, as opposed to one piece laid over the other. If the tractor is a toy or show piece rather than a heavily used tractor it probably doesn't matter. |

| In the past David Brown had dry liners available as spare parts. In Finland we used to fit these if for instans only one cylinder bore was damaged. I have never heard about any problems with over heating of the engine with these fitted. It was a very cost effective way of fixing damaged cylinder bores and I know tractors that have been doing a lot of work for more than 20 years after the liners was fitted. |

| Engine rebuild kits are available for the 880 from Vapormatic, go on their website and in the VAP parts search box type in VPB9502 and you will see the kit. Retail price for the kit is around £271 plus VAT. |

Hi I'm a bit confused on the liner situation on the 880A Selectamatic, does the engine have pullable liners? or does the block have to be machined out to accept liners?
I found this ad on ebay for a rebuild kit for the 880A and it includes replacement liners, I emailed the seller and asked the question and he assures me that he has been suppling these for years and the 880A Definitely has liners fitted, So not sure about all this and thought I would just ask here and see what you think, Heres the link to the ebay engine rebuild kit I'm looking at below
